Dr Steven Craig
Dr Craig is a respected specialist surgeon, committed to providing the highest standards of surgical care in regional Australia. He develops strong patient relationships and is approachable, empathetic and easily accessible.

Dr Craig completed his specialist training in General Surgery before moving to Canada to undertake further sub-specialist training in Endocrine Surgery and Surgical Oncology.
He provides a wide range of sub-specialty and general surgery procedures, as well as on-call emergency services to hospitals throughout the Illawarra-Shoalhaven region.

Dr Craig understands the significant stress and difficulties faced by those in our region who are newly diagnosed with cancer, and endeavours to see all new cancer referrals as promptly as possible.

Dr Craig is a dedicated surgeon who has undertaken extensive training in order to provide expert surgical services to the Illawarra-Shoalhaven region. He completed a Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Wollongong in 2004, then graduated from the University of Sydney Medical School with a Bachelor of Medicine/ Bachelor of Surgery with honours in 2008.

After undertaking his internship and residency with Illawarra–Shoalhaven Local Health District, he completed a Master of Surgery from the University of Sydney. He then started surgical training with the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, initially in the field of paediatric surgery.​ After several years in the paediatric surgery program, he changed his focus to adult general surgery, to better serve the needs of his local community on the South Coast of NSW. In 2017, he was awarded a Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) in General Surgery.

In 2018, Dr Craig was accepted into the prestigious American Association of Endocrine Surgeons' fellowship training program at the University of Calgary, Canada. Here, he completed extensive sub-specialist training in Endocrine Surgery and Surgical Oncology, as well as research work in the field of thyroid cancer.​ This broad education and training has provided Dr Craig with the credentials and experience to see and treat a wide variety of patients and surgical conditions.​ Dr Craig is a member of numerous professional associations, and is an Associate Professor of Surgery at The University of Wollongong. He remains active across a wide variety of research and teaching activities.

Outside of work Dr Craig enjoys surfing and spending time with his wife and 3 beautiful children.​

Surgical Oncology (breast cancer, melanoma, head and neck, skin and sarcoma).

He also offers a comprehensive general surgery service to the South Coast Region, including:

minimally invasive surgery (including cholecystectomy and hernia repair)​

gastroscopy and colonoscopy

on-call emergency and trauma surgery.
Please note that Dr Craig is also available to assist with the initial investigation of patients with a suspected malignancy, and to perform point-of-care ultrasound and biopsy if required.

Dr Craig operates at Shoalhaven District Memorial Hospital, The Wollongong Hospital, Milton Ulladulla Hospital, Nowra Private Hospital, and Wollongong Private Hospital.

​For your first consultation, please be sure to bring:

your Medicare card (and pension card or DVA Gold card, if you have one)

the results of any tests, including scans (x-rays, CT scans, ultrasounds and MRI), blood tests and biopsy results (you may need to check with your doctor to ensure you have all necessary results)

a letter of referral from your local doctor (advise our receptionist before your appointment if your doctor has sent this to the clinic directly).

Please note that we strive to be as punctual as possible with appointment times, but that occasionally, patients require more attention than anticipated. Dr Craig also provides on-call emergency surgical services to the district, and may be called away from the consulting rooms at short notice.
